The immigration laws in Denmark have increasingly been tightened since 1973, where the Government called for a hault to immigration. As of today, only relatively few people are able to immigrate to Denmark and the immigration laws in Denmark are known to be the strictest in the entire EU. After the recent changes in the immigration law effected by the current liberal-conservative Government, it has become even more difficult to immigrate to Denmark as a foreigner. Basically there are three ways to enter Denmark. Firstly you can marry a Dane. Secondly you can immigrate on a time-limited basis as either a student or on a time-limited work permit, but even that can sometimes be difficult. If you want to stay in Denmark for job reasons it requires that you have some very particular skills which Denmark lacks. The third way is to achieve refugee status because you have a well-grounded fear of being individually persecuted. Either way, it is difficult to immigrate, and some critics of the new immigration laws claim that Denmark is slowly turning into a fortress with very few possibilities of immigrating and marrying the one you love, if you want to live in Denmark, unless you both have Danish nationality.
